Possible retail development at old Trader Joe’s site

friendly-hobbs-site-121214-xx1073-805-64-0Commercial development is back on the table at what has affectionately become known as the “Trader Joe’s” site located at the corner of Hobbs and Friendly Ave near the Friendly Center.

According to the Triad Business Journal, Halpern Enterprises, an Atlanta-based firm, is eyeing the site for a 60,000 square foot development at the controversial location.

The chairman of the company said Wednesday that plans include a grocery store as well as a multi-tenant building that could be home to mixture of restaurants and retailers.

The city’s zoning commission will meet on January 12, with a public hearing to be held for the company’s request to rezone the property from low-and-moderate residential to mixed-use commercial.

An effort to develop the 6.7 acre parcel for a Trader Joe’s was met with objections by a group of local residents who argued against the what they felt was commercial intrusion in an area with high residential zoning.
